Lawmaker Proposes Federal Vehicle Mileage Tax | ASCE SmartBrief
Rep. Sam Graves, R-Mo., has proposed a vehicle mileage tax that would go toward about $1 trillion in infrastructure projects. Graves, the leading Republican on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said the tax could apply immediately to commercial vehicles and be adapted for private vehicles.  Full Story: The Washington Times

House Bill Targets Smaller Cities for Transportation Funding | ASCE SmartBrief

At least 30% of the Department of Transportation's BUILD grants would be channeled to cities with 10,000 to 75,000 residents under a House bill introduced by Washington state representatives. "As House Democrats develop a broad plan to rebuild our nation's roads, bridges, transit systems, and other critical infrastructure, it's critical that suburban cities and small towns don't get left behind," said Rep. Heavy Rains Cause Tennessee Flooding and Rockslide | EDM Digest

Heavy rains across the south have led to widespread flooding, the threat of dam failures and a hillside collapse outside a popular town in Tennessee. A 70-foot rockslide that occurred early Tuesday on the northbound side of the US 441 spur that links the tourist towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge completely blocked the roadway. However, the road has since reopened. In Yazoo County, Mississippi, a leaking earthen dam was being monitored, while a levee breach in Leake led to homes being evacuated.

Tennessee needs about $55 billion worth of public infrastructure improvements over a period ending in June 2023, according to a report by the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR). This increase is for transportation and utilities from road projects being developed as part of the “Improve Act.” One of the biggest fiscal challenges elected officials face is dealing with aging infrastructure.
