Tennessee Aquarium Warns of Danger Posed By Invasive Carp | News Channel 9
“We have four species of carp from Asia in the United States. All four are invasive, and they all negatively affect our ecosystems,” says Dr. Bernie Kuhajda, Science Programs Manager at the Tennessee Aquarium. “Invasive species don’t add positively to the aquatic environment,” Kuhajda adds. “They wreak havoc and cause our native species to decline and — in some severe instances — to completely disappear.”

U.S. farmers have enjoyed a competitive advantage in accessing the global export market with their products, but continued underinvestment in the aging inland waterways system will limit U.S. agricultural exports, and during the next 25 years, could put more than $72 billion in additional GDP and 77,000 new jobs at risk, a new report from Agribusiness Intelligence found.

Thrive (Thrive Regional Partnership in Chattanooga.) will work with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, which received the $250,000 Federal Highway Administration grant, Massengill said. The grant will be matched by regional transportation groups and provide a total of $322,500 for the work, she said. The study will project freight volumes in the trucking, automotive and flooring industries across the 16-county region in Southeast Tennessee, Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama. Over the course of the next year, officials will examine regional needs and priorities and recommend solutions.
